Appointment Ceremony of Professor Hans Georg Engel as a Visiting Professor hosted at Tsinghua University’s New Civil Engineering Building

On November 30th, 2023, Tsinghua University’s New Civil Engineering Building hosted the appointment ceremony of Professor Engel as a visiting professor. Professor Fang Dongping, Dean of the School of Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University, delivered an address and presented Professor Engel with the official letter of appointment signed by Principal Wang Xiqin of Tsinghua University.

On behalf of the School, Professor Fang warmly welcomed and congratulated Professor Engel. With extensive international experience in automotive research and sustainable transportation, Professor Engel has played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration between Tsinghua University and Mercedes-Benz in both academic and industrial sectors. During the ceremony, Professor Fang expressed the hope that as a visiting professor, Professor Engel would further enhance collaboration in talent development and participate in internationalized practical education and teaching.

Following the appointment ceremony, Professor Engel presented on "BEV Transformation in China and Mercedes-Benz Regional Strategy Sharing." He emphasized China’s position as the world’s largest electric vehicle market for the eighth consecutive year in 2023. Professor Engel highlighted the dominance and strong competitiveness of domestic brands in China across product, technology, pricing, and update speed. Additionally, he analyzed the key preferences of Chinese electric vehicle consumers and Mercedes-Benz's strategic approach to localized development, emphasizing increased research and investment in China.

Seminar Venue

Following the presentation, Professor Engel actively participated in discussions with faculty and students, addressing topics such as, electric vehicle subsidies, autonomous driving technology, interior environment, spatial utilization and Mercedes-Benz's competitive brand quality and pricing strategies. This seminar underscored Professor Engel's profound understanding and interest in current automotive industry trends. The event drew participation from faculty and over 60 students across various departments, including Civil Engineering, Vehicle and Transportation Engineering, and Electrical Engineering.
