Research Interests

1. Research on New Concept, New Technology of Road Engineering.
Prof. SHI is leading a research group in Highway and Railway Engineering. They focus their interest on road policy, planning, as well as road low-carbon technologies, road eco-technologies, road landscape technology, etc. The project “Study on comprehensive evaluation system of road projects based on both equity and efficiency (70571046)” was carried out since 2005, which was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Prof. SHI got the first prize for "new ideas and new concepts of urban road overhaul technology research" in 2006(held by Beijing City Road Political Bureau). At present, the main research includes road risk quantification analysis and countermeasure, and new energy application in the field of road engineering
2. Research on Planning Theory and Evaluation Method
v. SHI has engaged in the transportation planning, social infrastructure planning research for many years. Whose main contributions are in the traffic demand prediction modeling and application, integration modeling, and improving the prediction accuracy theory and method, the policy of price discrimination in the toll road application is also included. Research on comprehensive evaluation of transportation infrastructure based on both equity and efficiency is carried out. An important innovation is proposed a measure of equity and establish quantitative evaluation models. Current research are about the construction of ecological civilization in the transportation system, suitable for the future of the transportation system planning study for aging society.
3. Research on Traffic Safety and Driving Behavior
Research on the rural road safety audit is carried out with the support from National Key Technology R&D Program (2007BAK35B06). Research on traffic safety focuses on two aspects: road infrastructure and transport participants. Meanwhile, research on Chinese motor vehicle drivers’ driving behavior is carried out with the support from National Key Technology R&D Program (2009BAG13A05). In the domestic and foreign journals (AAP, TRF, etc.),Dr. SHI published a number of related papers (SSCI index),.
Since 2015,The project“Quantitative method research of road risk based on risk factor analysis of aberrant driving behavior” has been supported by The National Natural and Science Foundation of China. The study of the influence of aberrant driving behavior on traffic safety and traffic efficiency is the innovative contribution. By means of driving simulator and CA model simulation, the quantification of the fog driving risk research, the influence of old driver to traffic flow, and distracting behaviors effects on traffic safety and traffic efficiency influence analysis make initiated achievements.
4. Research on Intelligent Transportation System and Smart City.
Aiming at the bottleneck of the development of Intelligent Transportation System in China and the countermeasures to solve the problem, Dr. SHI put forward that the correct direction of ITS should be the healthy development of the industry. In view of the problems in the development of Intelligent Transportation Systems, Dr. SHI cooperated with Toshiba Corporation, to explore intelligent transportation research on Tourism City, hoping to find the function of ITS to tourism, and the effect on the traveler's choice behavior, the research has achieved preliminary results.

5. Research on Leisure Travel Behavior in the context of ageing.

This is a new research field in this laboratory in recent years. Based on PT survey, traditional transportation research focuses on the daily travel of individuals within one day. However, leisure travel is usually multi-day long, and most of leisure travelers travel in groups. Personal preferences will affect the group's decision-making, and it is more difficult to use analysis and simulation for multi-day travels. The project “Research on Infrastructure Configuration and Management Based on the Mechanism of Leisure Travel Behavior Characteristics (51778340)” was carried out since 2018, which was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Following fields are researched with the support of the fund, (a) the impact of the opening of the high-speed rail on the travel choice behavior of travelers, (b) the choice behavior of the leisure travel mode of college students, (c) the impact of COVID-19 on the leisure choice behavior of Chinese residents, (d) the characteristics of the leisure choice behavior of residents along the Belt and Road, and the demand for infrastructure, etc.
