Rock-filled Concrete Technology Helps the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

In order to guarantee the water resources for artificial snow during the 2022 Winter Olympics, Tsinghua University team established a rock-filled concrete dam. The team overcame the problems of short construction period and complicated construction conditions, and won high recognition both at home and abroad for its low temperature rise of heat of hydration, good crack resistance, easy process, reduced cement consumption, and fast construction, etc. In 2021, Design and Practice - Rock-filled Concrete Dams became the first technical standard featuring China's original technology in the past 100 years since the founding of the International Commission on Dams (ICD). The application of this technology in the Winter Olympics dams fully demonstrates China's original scientific and technological strength.

The Xiaohaituo Mountain area is the first choice for the Yanqing competition area of the 2022 Winter Olympics. In order to ensure artificial snow production on the field, there must be sufficient water sources nearby. For this purpose, it is necessary to build two dams in the competition area for the purpose of water storage and recycling of water resources.

The address of the dam is between two narrow mountains. The road capacity is insufficient for rapid construction, combined with the complex terrain conditions of the race area, ordinary concrete dams basically cannot simultaneously meet the short construction period, high temperature and rainy season construction quality requirements. YANG Xiaolei (Chief Designer of the Snowmaking Diversion Project) and his team found that the rock-filled concrete technology is easy to construct, can make full use of on-site excavated materials, and has simple temperature control measures, so they chose the new dam type recognized by the International Commission on Dams and with independent intellectual property rights of Tsinghua University - the rock-filled concrete dam.

GAO Xitao is the construction manager of the Snowmaking Diversion Project. Dam height is 58 meters. From the first concrete pouring to the dam capping, the construction time is four months. He said, "The concrete pouring of a 58-meter-high dam can be completed in four months, which is a very fast progress and a breakthrough in historical construction period."

Prof. JIN Feng introduced, "Rock-filled concrete is a new type of mass concrete technology invented by Tsinghua University. It has the characteristics of low temperature rise of heat of hydration, good crack resistance, easy process, reduced cement consumption and fast construction."

In addition, rock-filled concrete technology has significant advantages in energy saving and emission reduction. The carbon emissions of rock-filled concrete are only two-thirds or even lower than those of normal concrete, so it is very energy-saving and environmentally friendly. China's dam construction technology will definitely go global and become the mainstream dam construction technology recognized by the whole world.

Professor AN Xuehui said, "The application of rockfill concrete technology in the Winter Olympics marks its recognition by China's top hydraulic engineering experts, and also signifies that this technology can go global in the future, contribute Chinese wisdom and strength to building a community with a shared future for mankind."

As of November 2020, China has built more than 130 new rock-filled concrete dams. The project "Rockfill Concrete Dams" was awarded the Second Prize of National Technical Invention in 2017 (Rank #1), which innovates the dam construction technology route, overcomes the temperature control problems of concrete dams, and establishes a technical standard system for rock-filled concrete dams.

Design and Practice - Rock-filled Concrete Dams has become the first technical standard of the International Commission on Dams (ICD) in the past 100 years to feature original Chinese technology. Michael F. Rogers, Chairman of the International Commission on Dams (ICD), spoke highly of rock-filled concrete dams as safe, reliable, environmentally friendly, and the world's most rapidly developing dam design and construction technology in the past 20 years. He said, "As the Chairman of the International Committee on Dams, I fully support the continuous development of rock-filled concrete dams and promote continuous innovation in the global scientific and technological community."

The successful application of China's original technology in the Winter Olympics dam fully explains the concept of Scientific and Technological Olympics and Green Olympics. The rock-filled concrete technology is going global.
