The paper Regional patterns and physical controls of streamflow generation across the conterminous United States recently published by Prof. Jianshi Zhao's team in Water Resources Research was featured as Editors' Highlights in the Earth and space science news and analysis (Eos) from American Geophysical Union (AGU).

It is reported that this study extends the long-used conceptual framework of the Dunne diagram in the field of hydrology to a quantitative classification of flow production patterns with a data-driven analysis method, which more systematically and thoroughly reveals the flow production mechanism and its main controlling factors in the basin. It is expected to play a supporting role in the selection, process representation and accuracy improvement of hydrological models.

The 1st author of the paper is Shuyue Wu, a PhD student from the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at Tsinghua University, the corresponding author is Prof. Jianshi Zhao, and the co-authors are Academician Wang Hao from China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research (IWHR), and Prof. Sivapalan from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
