Professor Roberto T. Leon was Appointed as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University
Roberto T. Leon, David H. Burrows Professor of Charles E. Via, Jr. Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, was appointed as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University on January 7. Professor Leon gave a lecture entitled "On the Role of Advanced Expertise in Developing Composite DesignProvisions" after the appointing ceremony. Professor Lin-Hai Han, Vice Dean of School of Civil Engineering, issued the letter of honorary appointment to Professor Leon. Dr Wei Li, Assistant Dean of School of Civil Engineering hosted the ceremony.

Dr. Leon is a prominent scholar in structural engineering. His research focuses on dynamic behavior and design of composite and hybrid steel-concrete structures, bond of reinforcement under cyclic loads, testing of full-scale and model structures in the laboratory, and field instrumentation of structures.  He has made original contributions in the areas of steel bolted connections, partially-restrained composite frames, composite joists, unreinforced masonry behavior, composite columns and innovative steel structural systems. Among the recognitions for his technical work the ASCE Norman Medal in 2000, the ASCE State-of-the-Art Civil Engineering Award in 1996 and 2000, the ASCE Huber Prize in 1988, the AISC T.R.Higgins Lectureship Award from the American Institute of Steel Construction in1993, and the ACI Design Award in 2015. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the AISC in 2016.
